Biography and Research
Rune Rattenborg is an archaeologist and assyriologist, educated at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies of the University of Copenhagen (MA Assyriology 2012) and the Department of Archaeology of Durham University (PhD Archaeology 2017). Working across digital epigraphy and landscape archaeology, his research centres on data-driven perspectives on the materiality of writing in the cuneiform world. His doctoral dissertation presented a comparative study of the scale of six Bronze Age palatial economies in Syria, Iraq and Turkey as viewed through the combined lenses of quantitative data from administrative records and archaeological settlement data. From 2020-2023, he was the co-PI and research coordinator of Geomapping Landscapes of Writing (GLoW), a mixed-methods project based at Uppsala University, with the aim of providing a global survey of the cuneiform record, a written corpus counting more than 500,000 artifacts.
